LESS LAG. A CLEARER PICTURE.
Gaming speed test: check ping, jitter and lag
Fast downloads do not always mean smooth games. Check response time, jitter and delay during transfers, then choose one change to try.
Check my connection for gamingOpens our internet speed test. No account needed. Standard can use up to about 100 MB.
The browser test checks your connection to a test server. Your game may report a different ping.
Run the test, then read your result
- Use the device you play on. Pause downloads and backups.
- On the test page, choose Standard, press Start and keep the tab open until it finishes.
- Read WHAT IT MEANS FOR YOU and the suggested first step. Open Stability & loaded latency for jitter and delay during transfers.
What the numbers mean for gaming
Response time / ping · ms
How long a response takes. Lower means less delay to the test server. This is an HTTP measurement, so compare your game's own ping too.
First check: compare Wi-Fi with Ethernet on the same device.
Jitter · ms
How much response time varies. A steadier connection is preferable; a low average can hide occasional spikes.
First check: pause other traffic and repeat to see whether the variation falls.
Latency under load · ms
Response time while the test downloads or uploads. A large rise from the idle value can help explain lag during updates or backups.
First check: pause competing transfers and compare again.
Download / upload · Mbps
How much data the connection can transfer per second. Download helps with updates; upload matters when sending data or sharing the connection. More Mbps alone does not guarantee lower ping.
First check: look at delay and jitter before upgrading your plan.
A dash means a measurement is missing. Run another complete test; do not treat missing data as a healthy result.
Your result: what to try first
Fast downloads, but high or uneven delay
Try Ethernet, or move closer to the router if cable is unavailable. Retest on the same device and check the game's ping with its server region unchanged.
Delay rises during downloads or uploads
Pause updates and cloud backups. If delay falls, schedule those transfers outside play time.
The test looks good, but one game still lags
Check that game's server status and network statistics. Compare a nearby server region if available. Check frame rate too: low FPS needs device or graphics troubleshooting.
It mainly happens in the evening
Compare daytime and evening results using the same device and connection. Follow the evening slowdown guide to narrow down the cause.
Did the change help?
For a change that keeps the same network setup, use Did that change help? on the test page: save a starting result, make one change, then run the second check within 30 minutes. Select Wi-Fi before both tests when comparing router locations.
For Wi-Fi versus Ethernet, record the two results separately: the guided comparison requires the same network setup.
Check my connection for gamingGaming connection questions
How many Mbps do I need for gaming?
Check the game's published requirements. Multiplayer needs responsive, consistent networking as well as enough bandwidth. Game downloads and cloud gaming have different bandwidth needs.
Why am I lagging with fast internet?
High or uneven delay, competing transfers or the route to the game server can cause lag even with fast downloads. Start with the matching action above.
Does a US or Canadian server guarantee low ping?
No. Distance, routing and server conditions all matter. Compare nearby regions using the ping reported inside the game.
