UPLOADS, BACKUPS AND DELAY

Internet Slow When Uploading Files? Check the Delay

Uploading a large file, syncing photos or running a cloud backup can compete with other activity for outgoing capacity. The download number may still look good while calls, games and pages feel delayed.

Test between calls, not during one.

What gets busy when you send files?

Upload and download are different directions. Your camera, cloud backup and file-sharing apps all use upload capacity. When a bottleneck is busy, data can wait in queues and response times can rise. Excessive queueing delay under load is often called bufferbloat; this test can show the delay, but cannot prove where the queue is or which device caused it.

Start with a quiet baseline

Finish or leave any call. Pause large uploads, photo syncing and backups through the app’s normal controls, and note which ones you paused. Keep the same device, connection, VPN setting and Standard test depth. Press Start and keep the tab open until it finishes. Standard can use up to about 100 MB per check; two checks can use up to about 200 MB. Check your data allowance first.

Read upload and latency together

Upload in Mbps describes outgoing transfer capacity; a higher number means more measured capacity. Response time in ms describes idle delay to our server. Open Stability & loaded latency and compare Latency while uploading with the idle Response time. Jitter describes variation in delay. A dash means a missing measurement, not zero delay. The test creates its own upload traffic, so you do not need to restart a large backup during the measurement.

Compare one change, not two different setups

If you already have a result from when backups were active, use Did that change help? Choose Pause downloads / backups, press 1. Save starting result, pause those transfers, confirm the same setup and run the second check within 30 minutes. Otherwise, keep the quiet baseline and compare the next short call or game with backups still paused. Do not deliberately disrupt an important meeting to reproduce the issue.

Your result: what to do next

If response time rises sharply during the test’s uploads, the connection is sensitive to load. If pausing your backups repeatedly improves the experience, competing traffic may contribute. Schedule backups outside calls and games, or try the backup app’s bandwidth limit if it offers one. Increase or decrease that limit gradually and compare; there is no single setting that suits every connection.

What if pausing backups does not help?

Compare another device and another service. If Wi-Fi is worse than Ethernet on the same device, follow the Wi-Fi comparison guide. If even quiet wired tests repeatedly show poor upload or high delay, check the upload speed included in your plan and share test times and results with your provider. If only one app struggles, check its status and own connection statistics.

Should I change my router or plan?

Before buying equipment, check whether your router supports Smart Queue Management (SQM) using its manufacturer’s instructions. SQM can help control queueing delay; support and settings vary. Record a baseline and compare after a change. A faster plan may help when capacity is the limiting factor, but it does not guarantee lower delay or fix every Wi-Fi or application problem.

Common questions

Why do downloads slow down when I upload?

Some outgoing traffic is needed even while receiving data, and competing traffic or queueing can delay it. Compare the measurements rather than assuming a high download result rules out upload congestion.

Should I stop cloud backups permanently?

No. Try scheduling or limiting transfers so backups can complete outside sensitive activities. Pausing for a comparison does not replace a backup plan.

Can the test detect my backup app?

No. The test measures network behaviour, not your running applications or files. Check the app’s own transfer status.

Internet slows down mainly in the evening? Compare daytime and evening checks.

Record your own comparison

Record the two conditions below. These are your readings, not published research results. Repeat the comparison if results vary.

Enter and compare my measurements
Before changing anything
After pausing file transfers

Enter at least one matching pair of readings. Blank means not measured; zero is kept as a reading.
