Cloud Backup Slows Internet? Keep Calls Usable
A backup needs to finish, but it does not have to compete with your most important meeting. First check whether pausing the backup actually changes the problem.
Check my connectionRun between calls. The test uses internet data.
A controlled check for this problem
- Check the backup app’s activity and note its progress. Do not cancel the backup job or delete its data. Leave important meetings before measuring.
- If a running-backup result is already available, pause through the app’s controls and repeat with the same device, network and test depth. Otherwise use a quiet baseline and compare your next normal work session.
- Check both the network result and the next call or game. Resume the backup afterwards and verify its last successful completion.
A Standard test can use up to about 100 MB. Two tests can use up to about 200 MB; three up to about 300 MB. Check your data allowance and run between important calls.
What the comparison suggests
Pausing repeatedly improves calls
Schedule backups outside meeting hours or use the app’s supported bandwidth controls.
Low transfer speed continues with the backup paused
Compare Wi-Fi and Ethernet and check other household transfers.
Only backup completion is slow; other activity is fine
Investigate the backup app, file set and destination rather than treating it as a connection-wide fault.
Record your own comparison
Record the two conditions below. These are your readings, not published research results. Repeat the comparison if results vary.

Scheduling versus limiting
A schedule creates a quiet window for calls; a bandwidth limit allows slower progress during the day. Which works better depends on the backup size and how much time the device stays online. Change one control, then verify that a backup still completes.
Backblaze’s Windows client has performance controls, but names and options differ between backup products and operating systems. Use your product’s official guide. Increasing backup threads can make backup faster; it is not the first action when other activity is being crowded out.
A practical workday checklist
- Before meetings: check whether large backup transfers are active.
- After your last meeting: resume or allow the scheduled backup window.
- At the next check: verify the completion date in the backup app, not just the absence of network activity.
Do not disable backups permanently to make a speed test look better. If no schedule can finish the backup without disrupting work, discuss the workload and upload capacity with IT or the provider.
